The Church was first organized on October 12, 1919 with twenty-eight charter members. Services were first held in a school building on Channing Avenue in Portsmouth, Virginia. On July 7, 1920, a contract was let to move a building that was purchased from the Naval Ammunition Depot, St. Juliens Creek, to the present Church property on the corner of Afton and Prospect Parkways. This building was used for Church and Sunday School service for the next twenty years.

The cornerstone was laid for our present Sanctuary on October 5, 1940 with the first service held on December 22, 1940. Dedication services were conducted on January 26, 1941. The Sunday School building was built in 1963. World War II brought a great influx in both our community and our church.

Many physical improvements have occurred over the years but the most notably is the renovation of the sanctuary and the installation of a new sound system.
